Big changes have come! They are actually pretty small changes. But it's a pretty small project, so just about anything can be a big change. The big change that has come is the way I plan to attach this to my arm. I wasn't worrying so much about it in the past, but then it became apparent that the way I keep this on my arm could be the defining factor. I plan to make a tight fitting cloth sleeve in which the various components can be sewed into. Again, I did not bring the materials home with me from the lab, because there really isn't anything I can do at home that I can't do during lab time. So I have prepared another fascinating drawing. Another benefit of this approach is that it appears fairly discrete, and the components can be connected to each other through conductive thread, rather than wires. Plus, I get to learn to sew, which is a bonus, I suppose. The plan has evolved slightly, but the core concept remains the same. I feel more optimistic that it will turn out well than I did last week, I must admit. My creativity was aided through some conversations with new people about my project. It was very helpful to talk to folks who didn't know about my ideas, and they could bring their fresh perspectives to the table. Most of the same problems with my ideas remain unsolved, but I have new hope that it won't be so hard to fix.

My final project involves my attempt to create a device that I can wear which will help me to stop biting my nails. I have decided to go a route that involves a device I can wear, which will cause a small motor to vibrate when I touch my fingers to my mouth. I don't have the necessary materials with me at the time of this blog, so a drawing will have to do to get the point across...
I ended up choosing this method as opposed to a fidget or something because this takes a more active role in preventing me from biting my nails. A fidget can be easily ignored, but this would provide a constant reminder that I could not simply forget about. Some issues that have yet to be addressed are how I will make the circuit close when I touch my mouth. I don't have a whole lot of experience with circuits. I hope to be able to do this without having a bunch of wires attached to me, which would certainly not be practical. I am starting to be worried about the amount of progress I can reasonably make before the end of the semester. The most important things I want to keep in mind with this design is that my device needs to be discrete, and it most definitely needs to not have wires coming out every which way. Lacking the materials currently, I have only my imagination to use. My final goal for the semester is, at the very least, have a design that accomplishes my goal. I am fine with it not looking as good as I want the final product, I just want it to give me a solid idea of how best to proceed. I had no material to make a video on, sadly. |
